The UG-CLAT 2024 is designed to assess candidates' comprehension and reasoning abilities, focusing on skills essential for legal education, rather than prior knowledge.
Test Structure
It's a 2-hour exam with 120 multiple-choice questions, each carrying 1 mark. There's apenalty of 0.25 marks for each incorrect answer.
The exam comprises five sections:
English Language: Passages derived from fiction and non-fiction literature, followed byquestions testing comprehension, inference, summary, comparison, and vocabulary. Current Affairs and General Knowledge: Passages from news and non-fiction sources, assessing awareness of contemporary events, arts, culture, international affairs, and historical significance.
Legal Reasoning: Passages related to legal matters, public policy, or moral issues. No prior legal knowledge is required. Questions test the identification of rules and principles, their application to fact scenarios, and understanding changes in rules impact.
Logical Reasoning: Short passages with questions that require recognizing arguments, premises, and conclusions, analysing reasoning patterns, inferring consequences, drawingrelationships, and assessing argument effectiveness. Quantitative Techniques: Textual representations of numerical data followed by questions that necessitate deriving, inferring, and manipulating information, along with applying 10th standard mathematical operations.
Exam Format
✔ Maximum Marks: 120
✔ Duration: 2 hours (120 minutes)
Question Types:
✔ Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs): 120 questions in total
✔ Marking Scheme: Each correct answer earns 1 mark.
✔ Negative Marking: 0.25 marks deducted for each incorrect answer.
Subject Areas and Approximate Weightage:
1. English Language: 22-26 questions (Approx. 20% of the paper)
2. Current Affairs, including General Knowledge: 28-32 questions (Approx. 25% of the paper)
3. Legal Reasoning: 28-32 questions (Approx. 25% of the paper)
4. Logical Reasoning: 22-26 questions (Approx. 20% of the paper)
5. Quantitative Techniques: 10-14 questions (Approx. 10% of the paper)
Preparation
The Consortium will provide preparatory materials, including guides, model question papers, and instructional resources for each section. Candidates will have access to a learning platform with practice materials and guidance from subject experts. Apart from these resources, candidates are encouraged to enhance reading and comprehension skills, stay informed about current affairs through newspapers and periodicals, and practice quantitative questions using materials like 10th-grade mathematics textbooks.
